Course number and title: DTS405H1F Advanced Topics in DTS: Human Trafficking and/in Diaspora

Course Description: The course will critically examine trafficking of adults and children for labour and sexual exploitation. It will include case studies and legal texts of relevant anti-trafficking laws and international conventions, and address this problem in an interdisciplinary fashion in relation to to diaspora, economics, politics, and security.

Class schedule: Thursdays, 13:00-15:00

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024

Delivery method: In-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change.

Salary: Pay for half course including 4% vacation pay

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90
Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $9,930.79
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77
Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,326.62
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76
Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,570.02

Please note that should the rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications: 

  • PhD in social sciences or humanities
  • Background in areas related to human trafficking and diaspora
  • Previous teaching experience at the university level
  • Evidence of teaching excellence
  • Ability to teach online if public health issues require

Preferred qualifications:

  • Research and expertise in human trafficking and diaspora

Description of duties: 

  • Design, preparation, and delivery of course content
  • Coordination of an undergraduate course
  • Administration and marking of assignments and tests 
  • Calculation and submission of grades
  • Providing scheduled and regular office hours

Course Description: The course provides an interdisciplinary approach and discusses the concepts of religion, the vernacularization of religion, and the integration of folkloric elements in diaspora. The course focuses on diaspora theory and selected case studies in the transformation of religious practices and religious space in diaspora settings.
